Inspired by traditional Asian medicines and known for many years in beauty institutes, rollers made of jade or semi-precious stone have recently become accessible to the general public. Now, everyone can learn about the beauty rituals of Chinese princesses, who used real jade stones. This is not the case with today’s rollers, because this precious stone would cost too much (several hundred euros). Other stones, such as rose quartz, with multiple lithotherapeutic properties, have now replaced it. And the shape of the tools varies to adapt to all needs and desires.

Roll-on or gua sha?

By rolling on the skin, the roll-on massages the surface and drains it slightly, while the natural freshness of the stone decongests the face. Ideal for completing morning and evening skincare routines. The large tip rolls over the entire face; the small one is used on bags and dark circles.

A small flat plate with rounded corners, the gua sha works deeper into the layers of the skin to “scrape” imperfections. It is considered the “Swiss army knife of beauty tools”, and its use requires more technical know-how. Its shape fits all angles of the face depending on the side used, and it acts directly on the lymph and blood circulation. It helps firm the skin and smooth out wrinkles and fine lines.

Which stone to choose?

The quality of the stone is important because, for lithotherapy, each one has its specificity and its way of rebalancing energies. In order to choose it well, we say that you have to feel attracted to it, love it by touching it with your left hand (if you are right-handed) and closing your eyes, to better feel its energetic vibrations.

  • Rose quartz: it is the stone of femininity and love. A good choice for a first massage tool, since it is suitable for all skin types. It is said to have anti-aging and soothing properties.
  • Rock crystal: in Ayurveda it is the stone of the seventh chakra, of the connection with the divine. It is the stone of stones, the one that recharges the others with energy. It would give luminosity to the skin and stimulate blood circulation. It can also be used to massage the body (it is attributed with anti-cellulite properties).
  • Green aventurine (not to be confused with jade): it would promote tranquility and mental stability. It would also help to detoxify (it is indicated for acne) and to restore radiance to dull skin.
  • Amethyst: this very powerful purple stone would allow to better channel emotions. On the skin, it is recommended for targeted problems: abscesses, large pimples, eczema. It is also known to recharge other stones with energy.

How to recharge them with energy?

According to lithotherapy, stones release energy and need to be recharged regularly. Regine Labrosse suggests simply cleaning them under tap water or – better! – in river water. You can also take advantage of the full moon to expose them to its light on the edge of a window. Be careful with fire, which is too dangerous and risks damaging the metal elements. On the other hand, fumigation with a white sage smudge can be recommended: “Stay twenty to thirty seconds above the smoke. This ritual is sanitizing, antibacterial and would even elevate the spirit,” assures the specialist. Finally, you can place your stones on a geode (a large amethyst stone with multiple facets). It too must be recharged from time to time in the light of the moon. If you live in a polluted city or if you are in contact with sick people, specialists recommend cleaning these stones every two days. If there are good vibes in the house, once a week or every two weeks is enough.
